ABOUT
Friends Group for the National Wildlife Refuges and Forest of coastal South Carolina
The South Eastern Wildlife and Environment Education Association (SEWEE Association) is the Friend's Group for the National Wildlife Refuges (NWR) and National Forest (NF) of coastal South Carolina. We are partners with Cape Romain NWR, Ernest F. Hollings ACE Basin NWR, Waccamaw NWR and Francis Marion NF.
We work with our federal partners to achieve their mission in biological, cultural and educational activities. We have supported the Endangered Red Wolf and the Loggerhead Sea Turtle Nesting projects of Cape Romain NWR for over 10 years. We have helped Ernest F. Hollings ACE Basin NWR create a new public use area on the Combahee unit of the refuge. And we have worked with Waccamaw NWR as they develop places for visitors both in Georgetown and Horry counties. Check out the details on these projects!
What is a Friends Group?
A Friends Group is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established primarily to assist or benefit a specific National Wildlife Refuge or National Forest. A Friends Group can be the vehicle to provide an outlet for citizens' passion about our wild areas.
From its start in 1903, the National Wildlife Refuge System has owed its very existence to concerned citizens eager to protect America's natural resources. There are now more than 200 Friends groups, with about 10 new organizations created each year. Some support a single refuge while others are connected to a refuge complex or multiple refuges.
Friends organizations are crucial to the collective mission of the Refuge System to conserve and protect the wildlife of this great nation. Friends organizations are essential to helpng millions of Americans understand that their actions today determine the legacy we leave for tomorrow – and they are they motivation for a new generation of conservations.
